Automattic is best known as the parent company of Wordpress, which powers 33 percent of the world’s top 10 million websites. They reached out to me to work on integrating Sensei, a recently acquired course creation product, into Wordpress. This involved:

• Auditing the information architecture of the Sensei product
• Recommending improvements for the first-time user flow
• Designing an entirely new content block to integrate Sensei into Gutenberg, the Wordpress WYSIWYG editor

I was the sole product designer across all of this MVP work, working under a design lead.

The challenge

The early part of the project involved a lot of discussion around how to integrate Sensei into Wordpress. Initially, the consensus was to treat Wordpress and Sensei as two separate experiences. However, we got to thinking—would we be able integrate Sensei into Wordpress as a content block?
